Liposuction

Nature of Operation.

The patient is admitted on the morning of the operation. Large areas are best treated using general anesthesia and sedation. Small stab incisions (few millimeters) are made at strategic points on the skin surface for the insertion of the cannula (or surgical probe).

Once all the fat is removed the incisions are sutured and a specially designed pressure garment is fitted. The length of stay in the clinic is usually no longer than one night.

Postoperative Events
Apart from the complications that are common to all surgical operations for example bruising and swelling, the following are specific to liposuction procedures.

Question/Comments

Scars
These are generally small and wherever possible are placed at sites that are not easily conspicuous. Whereas a permanent mark will always remain, it will not as a rule cause the patient any grave concerns.

Rippling and Sagging of the skin
This can occur if either excessive amounts of fat have been removed from an area or if the skin is of such poor tone initially that removing even a small amount of fat will exacerbate this effect.

Although each case must be assessed on its own merits, as a general guide, those patients who are under the age of 35 years old have a much better chance of a satisfactory result.

It is impossible to predict accurately that exercise will tighten up after the operation. It is important to appreciate that some patients will not accept loose skin in return for a more pleasing contour whereas others will do so quite happily.

At present there is no effective way of tightening loose skin once it has stretched sufficiently to lose its elasticity, apart from surgery. The final result state of the skin is variable and very much dependent on the unique physiology, particular to each individual.

Postoperative Management
Patients are usually advised to rest for the first 24 to 48 hours. There is usually a degree of stiffness and discomfort. After a time patients are encouraged to become active.

Most surgeons usually recommend an elastic garment and these should be worn constantly for several weeks. The purpose of the garment is to help mould the reshaped tissue. There is a wide variety of liposuction garments now available for all areas of the body.
